“We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.” Winston Churchill, 4th June 1940.
One of the most recognisable quotes in English history, and here in North Devon we will be reliving the D Day experience all over again on 15th & 16th June as Saunton Sands will be hosting their Devon D-Day event.
From vehicles and aircraft to interactive activities and re-enactments, there is plenty of fun for the whole family throughout the weekend. Just have a peek below to find out what will be landing (and parking) on Saunton Beach:
- Vintage Vehicle Parade
- Aircraft landings
- Aircraft depart
- Major Battle display
- Liberty Sisters Trio
- Interactive Little Normandy
- Interactive Allied and German Camps
- Battle of Britain ‘War Room’
- Interactive History Trail
- Visit Saunton D Day 2019 Facebook Event for full details.
You may not be aware that Devon D-Day is hosted on Saunton Sands because it is where more than 10,000 American GI’s planned and trained for their attack on Omaha and Utah beaches.
Not only did the American GI’s train on Saunton but Braunton Burrows was home to the Assault Training Centre between September 1943 and April 1944. Hidden in the vast landscape of the sandy dunes are remains of the originally training facility that they built and used.
If after reading this you would love to visit but you live too far away for it to be a day trip, why not make a weekend of it and book yourself a break with us.
